Press release, Taiwan Bio Industry Organization
4 November, 2021, Taipei, Taiwan

The second part of the annual BIO Asia–Taiwan biotechnology conference will return with the onsite exhibition, held November 4th to 7th, 1st and 4th floors, Hall 2, TaiNEX 2 Exhibition Center, Taipei. This year's focus will be on progress of the biomedical industry emerging from the effects of the global COVID pandemic, international industry trends, the future of the biomedical and healthcare industries, and the identification of new business opportunities in the upcoming post-pandemic era.

The first part of BIO Asia–Taiwan 2021 was held as scheduled in July to overwhelming international acclaim. The BIO Asia–Taiwan exhibition–now in onsite format–will feature more than 650 companies–including 40 publicly listed companies–from 13 countries, covering 1,600 booths. Special Zones will feature biosimilars, medical materials, industry services, smart medicine, cell and regenerative medicine, an international zone, precision medicine and genetic testing, pharmaceutical equipment and instruments, new innovation, and government biomedical research and service entities. Local firms showcasing key findings and products include Medigen Vaccine Biologics, Golden Biotechnology, EirGenix, PharmaEssentia, Adimmune, SynCore Biotechnology, TaiMed Biologics, TaiGen Biotechnology, Formosa Laboratories, as well as others with new drug developments and innovative technologies for pandemic prevention. In the fields of precision medicine, genetic testing and cell therapy, featured companies include Quark Biosciences, PlexBio, GeneReach Biotechnology, Full Hope Biomedical, Ever Supreme, Purple Win, AsiaGen, and Acro Biomedical.

New Zone: Biosimilars, the key to rapidly evolving market conditions
In recent years, the development, approval and uptake of biosimilar drugs has been growing strongly internationally. In the face of the rapidly changing pharmaceutical market, knowing how to capture some of the growing USD100 billion in new business after the expiration of biologic drug patents will be essential to the bottom line of many a pharma company. This year the exhibition will feature a new Biosimilars Zone, bringing together prominent local and overseas manufacturers in this industry space, such as EirGenix, Amgen, Sandoz (Novartis), Viatris, Fresenius Kabi, and Celltrion. Taiwan’s leading firm in this space, EirGenix, has been working on breast cancer antibodies, eye disease therapies, carrier proteins for vaccines, in addition to high-end Chinese medicine. International drug maker Fresenius Kabi will attend, showcasing its specialty in drugs for chronic and debilitating diseases including cancers. With new biosimilars providing alternative treatment solutions, this growing class of drugs is driving medical reforms within Taiwan’s healthcare ecosystem and heralding in a new generation of advanced medical interventions.

Despite the pandemic, international interest is high with more opportunities than ever for cross-border cooperation
Since 2019 the world has been severely affected by the COVID pandemic. In spite of this, BIO Asia–Taiwan has and will continue to be a beacon for biotechnology for Taiwan, Asia and the world. International interest remains high, with pavilions at this year’s International Zone from the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Poland, Australia, Malaysia, the Philippines and others. Prominent international companies with booths include GSK, Cytiva, BD, Novartis, Eli Lilly, Chugai Pharma, and Takeda. By all accounts these firms are optimistic about the prospects of Taiwan's biotech industry and by actively participating in the exhibition are helping create bridges for cooperation between Taiwan and abroad. Government institutions with a presence at the exhibition will include Academia Sinica, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Academic entities include National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Tsing Hua University, Taipei Medical University, China Medical University, Chung Yuan Christian University, and Fu Jen Catholic University.
